Way Out West, The Contest 4: All Tied Up
Roscoe aimed his slingshot. Then he saw a familiar figure.
"Cleo!" Roscoe whispered. "You came back!"
Cleo nodded. "I want to help!"
By now Roscoe was sure that Cleo wasn't working with the wolves. But this was a mighty dangerous situation.
He shook his head. "You're not a cop, Cleo. This is too dangerous for you."
     Another pebble whizzed past them.
"It's too dangerous for anyone," Cleo said. "Besides, I used to, um, know these wolves. I can help!"
Roscoe heard footsteps. The other wolves were back.
"Did you find Cleo?" Tony asked.
     "No," Tilly said.
Rupert giggled. "But we got the toad!"
Roscoe peeked out. Poor Zeke was tied up!
"Cleo!" Roscoe whispered. "You're good at sneaking, right?"
     Cleo grinned. "I'm the best."
Roscoe nodded. "And I know you're a good pickpocket."
He quickly told Cleo his plan. Then Cleo crawled in one direction while Roscoe crawled in the other.
A few minutes later, Roscoe stood behind a tree. He held one end of a rope.
"I hope this works," he thought.
He took a deep breath and started shouting. "Cleo, help! I'm hurt—I can't walk!"
***
Cleo slipped to the other side of the campsite. She heard Roscoe shout for help.
Tony laughed. "That dog is hurt! This is our chance to get him!" He ran off.
Cleo crawled to Zeke and untied him. Then she crept closer to Tilly and Rupert. She reached out and plucked the slingshots from their belts. They didn't even feel it!
     "Help!" Tony shouted.
Rupert and Tilly ran to him. Cleo followed.
She saw Tony hanging from a tree, a rope around his foot. Tilly and Rupert reached for their slingshots.
"Ahem." Cleo held up their slingshots. "Looking for these?"
Roscoe quickly tied up Tilly and Rupert.
"You won, Roscoe," Cleo said. "You're the sheriff. Are you still going to . . ."
"Put you in jail?" Roscoe asked. "No. Stay out of trouble, though, okay?"
     Cleo nodded. "Sure thing, Sheriff."
***
The next morning federal marshals came for the Calamity Gang. They took the wolves away too.
Roscoe sat at his desk and smiled.
"Now I'll have some peace and quiet," he thought. "No more Calamity Gang and no more—"
The door flew open, and Cleo walked in.
Roscoe jumped up. "What are you doing here?"
Cleo showed him a badge, grinning. "Everyone here likes me, Roscoe. They made me your deputy!"
