Roxy flew downtown and found Detective Smith. He was in the middle of the road, chasing a chicken.
Roxy flew down. "Hey, Detective! Why did the chicken cross the road?"
"I don't know. Why?" Detective Smith said.
"Because you're chasing it!" Roxy said.
"Ha-ha, Rocket Girl," Detective Smith said. "I'm only chasing it because it's in the road."
"Right." Roxy looked around. Farm animals were wandering between stopped cars. "Do you know where all these animals came from?"
"Nope," Detective Smith said. "They just appeared out of nowhere. And that's not even the strangest thing going on."
"What do you mean?" Roxy asked.
Detective Smith pointed behind her. "Look over there."
Giant rows of corn were sprouting from the street and sidewalks. The corn was growing tall fast.
"Whoa!" Roxy thought. "The city is turning into a cornfield."
She saw some cornstalks wiggle. She flew over to take a look.
A car was stuck in the middle of the corn.
A woman stood near the car. "Can you help me, Rocket Girl?"
"What happened?" Roxy asked.
"First, farm animals blocked my car," the woman said. "Then this corn popped up around me. I'm so late for work!"
Roxy moved the woman's car out of the corn.
"Thanks, Rocket Girl!"
"No problem." Roxy took off, flying above the city to get a better look.
Soon she saw something strange. A big man was reaching into bags of seeds. Shwoop! Shwoop! Everywhere he dropped seeds, new cornstalks sprouted.
Roxy landed near the man. "Who are you?"
"Hee-haw!" the man said. He was wearing overalls and a straw hat. "I'm Barnyard Billy."
"Why are you planting corn in the streets of Metro City?" Roxy asked.
Barnyard Billy frowned. "I'm a farmer. Just like my daddy and my daddy's daddy. My animals and I were happy. Then city people stole my land, and I lost my farm!" He clenched his fist. "And they built all these ugly buildings and roads!"
"That's too bad about your farm," Roxy said. "But you're causing problems for people."
"Who cares!" Billy snapped. "I created a special, fast-growing corn for revenge. I'm going to turn Metro City into one gigantic farm!"
Billy whistled loudly.
Roxy gulped as live scarecrows stepped out of the cornfield.
"Guess what, boys!" Billy laughed. "It's time to scare somebody away—Rocket Girl!"
