Tom Kitten was playing outside.
"Time to clean up!" his mother called.
"My friends are coming for tea later."
Mrs. Twitchit washed Mittens' face.
She brushed Moppet's fur.
Then Mrs. Twitchit frowned.
"Tom!" Mrs. Twitchit cried.
"Come inside right now!"
Mittens and Moppet put on pink dresses.
Tom wore a clean shirt and new pants.
Mrs. Twitchit looked around the room.
"I need some pretty flowers," she said.
Tom dashed outside.
"I'll get some flowers!" he said.
Mrs. Twitchit sighed. "Don't get dirty!" she said.
Tom ran toward the pond.
He didn't see any pretty flowers.
But a frog sat on a boat.
"I'm Jeremy Fisher," the frog said.
"Can you help me find flowers?" Tom asked.
"Yes," Jeremy said. "Can you help me find fish?"
Tom looked down at his clean clothes.
"I must not get wet," he thought.
"But Mother needs flowers."
Tom stepped into Jeremy's boat.
Drip, drop.
Suddenly it started to rain.
