The Wishing Well 7: All That Glitters Is Not Gold
The children decided to go home and put their riches into bags. Cy and Bobby put all their gold coins into a backpack.
"How will I know which ones are mine?" asked Bobby.
"It doesn't matter," replied his brother. "We can share."
The girls decided to divide their money. "Panther, that's my gold coin," Jane said, grabbing a coin that fell to the floor.
"No, Jane. It's mine. It fell out of my pocket," argued Panther. She snatched the coin from her little sister and put it into her bag.
In town, the children were excited by their new wealth.
"What are you going to buy first?" Bobby asked Cy.
"I'm going to get a hundred games so I won't ever be bored," he answered.
"I'm going to buy a car," Bobby said with a sparkle in his eye.
"You can't drive," Jane pointed out.
Bobby shrugged and said, "Doesn't matter. I'll get a driver to drive me around."
Cy stopped in front of a store. "Here we are," he said. He lifted his hand toward the sign that read "Game World."
"I don't want to go in that store," said Bobby.
     "Me neither," agreed Jane.
"I'm going to Dot's Dress Shop to look at skirts," said Panther.
The children began to argue about where to go first. Finally Cy raised both hands and said, "We can all go wherever we want. We'll meet here after we've been shopping, okay?"
     The others quickly agreed.
Cy walked into the game store alone. His eyes fell on the rows and rows of games. "Wow!" he said, sucking in his breath.
"Can I help you?" asked the store clerk.
"Yes," Cy answered. "I want one of every game in the store."
Meanwhile, Bobby went to look at cars. He fingered a two-door silver sports car.
"Are you looking for a birthday gift for your dad?" one car salesman teased.
"Maybe he's saving up to buy it in ten years," laughed another.
"More like twenty years," roared the other.
Bobby held his head high and left the store. "They'll see," he thought.
Panther and Jane went to Dot's Dress Shop to buy some clothes. The girls tried on many dresses and found one that they liked.
"Jane, that's my dress," said Panther, pointing to the dress Jane was trying on. It was exactly the same one that Panther had on.
"It's my dress. I saw it first," Jane replied hotly.
"Why don't you find another dress?" Panther said sweetly.
"Why don't you?" Jane replied nastily.
Back at the game store, Cy stood at the checkout. He was counting all the new games that were soon to be his.
"Look, boy," said the clerk, "how are you going to pay for all this?"
"I happen to be a very rich man," Cy replied snobbishly.
"Maybe you should show me the money first," the clerk said, rolling his eyes.
Cy threw the heavy backpack of gold coins onto the counter. "This bag is full of money," he told the clerk.
"Cy!" Bobby said, suddenly running into the store. "I need some money for my car."
Cy pushed his brother away. "Not now, Bobby. I'm busy!" he said.
"But I found the car I want!" Bobby said. He tried to grab the bag.
Cy shoved Bobby. "I'll give it to you after I pay for my games!" he said.
"It's my money too!" yelled Bobby.
