Heidi 24: Clara Walks
Heidi reached the field of flowers and uttered a cry of joy. Peter, who was nearby with the flock of goats, heard her and turned to look. The whole ground in front of Heidi was filled with gold and yellow blossoms. Above the gold flowers grew thick bushes of deep blue flowers. Heidi turned around and ran back to Clara's side. "Oh, you must come, you must," said Heidi excitedly. "It is more beautiful than you can imagine."
     "But Heidi, how?" asked Clara.
"I will help you!" said Heidi.
"But you are smaller than me. Oh, if only I could walk!" said Clara.
Suddenly, Heidi had an idea. "Peter, Peter, come down here!" she yelled.
"No, I don't want to," Peter replied.
"I cannot do it alone. You must come and help me."
"No, I shall do nothing of the kind," said Peter angrily.
Heidi ran up to where Peter sat and said, "If you don't come at once, Peter, I will do something you won't like!" Heidi had no idea what she might do, but she was angry at Peter's stubbornness.
Peter was suddenly afraid. Maybe, just maybe, Heidi knew that he had destroyed Clara's wheelchair and was planning to tell someone. "If I come, will you promise not to do what you said?" asked Peter carefully.
"Yes," said Heidi, and so they both went back to Clara. Heidi told Peter to hold her up on one side, while she took the other, and together they helped Clara to her feet. So far, so good, but Clara could not keep upright without support.
"Put your arm around my neck," Heidi told her. "Peter, give her your arm." Peter had never done anything like this before, so Heidi showed him how to make a crook with his arm that Clara could lean on. Still, they were not very successful. Peter was taller than Heidi, so Clara was unbalanced and flopped heavily between them.
"Try putting one foot down firmly," Heidi advised her.
Cautiously, Clara tried it. "That didn't hurt nearly as much as I thought it would," she said.
"Try again," urged Heidi, and Clara placed her other foot, then managed several steps.
"Oh Heidi," she cried. "Look at me. I'm walking! I'm walking!"
Clara still kept hold of Heidi and Peter, but with each step they could feel her getting steadier on her feet. They didn't have far to go to reach the field of flowers. When they all sat down among the flowers of gold and blue, Heidi felt so glad at heart that she wanted to shout for joy.
They were all hungry, since it was long past noon. They ate their lunch, and soon after they finished, Heidi spotted Grandfather climbing up to get them. She ran to him to tell him the news about Clara and was so excited that she could hardly get the words out.
"So you fought the battle and won the day, did you?" Grandfather said to Clara when he reached her. He helped her up and made her walk a few steps, putting one arm around her waist and holding his other arm firmly in front of her so that she could hold on to it. With this support, she walked with more confidence than before. Heidi skipped joyfully beside them, and the old man looked as though a great happiness had come to him. "You have worked hard enough for today. You can try again tomorrow," he said. He then lifted her up onto his back, and off they went, down the mountainside.
