Cooking with Kids Central Friends 8: Bulgogi Cheesesteaks
Nina rushed into the farmyard. "I'm back!"
"Yay!" Izzie hugged Nina. "I missed you."
"How was your trip to Korea?" Jason asked.
"Fun!" Nina said. "My cousin Peter took me to beautiful royal palaces. We went to Namsan Tower and walked along Cheonggyecheon Stream. And I ate so many delicious foods."
     The kids went inside.
"Speaking of food . . ." Bobby pointed to the recipe screen. "What are bulgogi cheesesteaks?"
"Nina suggested this recipe," Chef said.
"Peter and I ate beef bulgogi in Korea," Nina said. "It reminded me of Philly cheesesteaks from home. So Mom and I made a cheesesteak with bulgogi for him."
Bobby patted his stomach. "Yum! Cheesesteak!"
"First we'll marinate the beef," Chef said. "Later we'll cook it."
Chef got some meat from the freezer. "I froze this for thirty minutes. It will be easier to slice into thin strips." He began slicing the meat.
The kids started making the marinade. Nina chopped garlic, and Bobby and Izzie chopped green onions. Jason mixed together soy sauce, sesame oil, and brown sugar. Nina added grated pear and black pepper.
"We'll put the meat and marinade in this container," Chef said.
Jason stirred the mixture to coat the meat well. Then he sealed the container. "Now it goes into the refrigerator for two hours."
     "What's next?" Izzie asked.
"Can I show everyone my photos from Korea?" Nina held up her phone.
"Sure," Chef said.  "After that, we'll weed the garden."

"Time to make the cheesesteaks!" Chef said.
     "Finally!" Bobby cheered.
Inside, Chef got out two onions. "Let's slice these first. We need thin strips."
"Wah!" Bobby said. "I'll try not to cry!"
Everyone laughed and began slicing. Next Nina put two tablespoons of butter in a pan. Izzie added the olive oil. After the butter melted, Chef put in the onions.
The onions turned soft and golden as Chef cooked them. "Bobby, please get a plate. We're going to remove the onions from the pan. Now we'll cook the meat over high heat."
The meat sizzled as Chef dropped it into the hot pan. Bobby stirred the meat to cook it evenly.
"Now we cut the sandwich rolls," Nina said. She sliced a long roll in half lengthwise. "Don't cut the roll all the way through. It should open like a book."
     Everyone carefully sliced their rolls.
Chef topped the meat with the onions. "What's next, Nina?"
"We add cheese and let it melt. Then we put the meat mixture on the rolls!"
At last the cheesesteaks were ready.
     "Delicious!" Bobby said.
Nina smiled. But suddenly she felt sad. Her chin trembled.
     "Nina! What's wrong?" Izzie asked.
"I miss Peter. I wish Seoul wasn't so far away."
"Let's send him a photo of us eating bulgogi cheesesteaks!" Jason said.
Nina took out her phone and burst out laughing. "I just got a text from Peter. Look at the photo he sent!"
Nina's cousin was eating a bulgogi cheesesteak!
"That's a wonderful thing about food," Chef said. "It brings us together—even when we're far apart."
Nina nodded. "That makes me so happy!"
