"그런데 넌 왜 그런 표정을 지었지? 나에게 사실대로 이야기해 보아라!" 사자가 명령했어요.
"저기, 음." 원숭이는 벌벌 떨었어요. "폐하께 입냄새가 나서요. 그게 다랍니다."
"My breath smells bad? Is that all?" repeated the lion.
"Oh yes! Yes, that's it. That's all!" said the monkey.
"Okay, then you will never smell it again!" And the lion ate the monkey up.
"내게 입냄새가 난다고? 그게 다라고?" 사자는 반복해서 말했어요.
"네 그렇습니다! 그렇습니다, 그것 뿐이에요. 그게 다랍니다!" 원숭이가 말했어요.
"좋아, 그럼 네가 다시는 내 입냄새를 맡지 못하도록 해주마!" 그러고는 사자는 원숭이를 잡아먹어버렸어요.
The lion was still angry. So he stopped a rabbit passing by. "You there! Stop! Come here and smell my breath," he ordered.
"Me? Oh, yes, my king." The rabbit was scared.
When the lion breathed, she groaned, "Ohh!"
"Does it smell good or bad?" the lion asked.
사자는 여전히 화가 났어요. 그래서 그는 지나가는 토끼를 멈춰 세웠어요. "거기 너! 멈춰! 이쪽으로 와서 내 입냄새를 맡아보아라." 사자는 명령했지요.
"저요? 오, 네, 왕이시여." 토끼는 겁이 났어요.
사자가 숨을 쉬었을 때 토끼는 신음 소리를 냈어요. "우!"
"입냄새가 좋으냐 나쁘냐?" 사자가 물었어요.
The rabbit knew that the lion ate the monkey. So she lied to the lion. "Oh, my king, your breath smells wonderful."
토끼는 원숭이가 사자에게 잡아먹힌 것을 알았지요. 그래서 토끼는 사자에게 거짓말을 했어요. "오, 왕이시여, 입냄새가 아주 좋습니다."
"Is that so? How wonderful does it smell?" he asked.
"Umm, uh, your breath smells fruity like an apple," said the rabbit.
"You are lying to me!" growled the lion. So he ate the rabbit up too.
"그러냐? 입냄새가 얼마나 좋단 말이냐?" 사자가 물었어요.
"흠, 어, 폐하의 입냄새는 사과 같은 과일 냄새가 납니다." 토끼가 말했어요.
"넌 내게 거짓말을 하고 있구나!" 사자는 으르렁거렸어요. 그렇게 사자는 토끼도 잡아먹었지요.
The fox saw all of this from behind a tree. He was so terrified that he tried to run away.
"You, little fox," called the lion. "Stop there!"
여우가 나무 뒤에서 이 모든 것을 보았어요. 여우는 너무 무서워 도망가려고 했어요.
"너, 작은 여우." 사자가 불렀어요. "거기 멈춰라!"
"Ah . . . oh, yes, my king!" answered the fox.
"Come here and smell my breath," said the lion.
"어…… 오, 예, 왕이시여!" 여우가 대답했어요.
"이쪽으로 와서 내 입냄새를 맡아보아라." 사자가 말했어요.
The poor little fox had no choice but to smell the lion's breath.
The lion breathed. "How was it? Was it good or bad?"
"Umm . . . what should I tell him?" thought the fox.
불쌍한 작은 여우는 사자의 입냄새를 맡을 수밖에 없었어요.
사자는 숨을 쉬었죠. "어떠냐? 좋았냐 나빴냐?"
"흠…… 내가 사자에게 어떻게 말해야 하지?" 여우는 생각했어요.
The lion's breath smelled really bad. The fox could not lie to him. But he could not tell the lion what it was really like either.
"Why don't you say something?" the lion asked. "Do you think my breath smells bad?"
사자의 입냄새는 너무 고약했어요. 여우는 그에게 거짓말을 할 수 없었어요. 하지만 여우는 그 냄새가 어떤지를 사실대로 말할 수도 없었지요.
"넌 왜 아무 말도 않느냐?" 사자가 물었어요. "넌 내 입냄새가 나쁘다고 생각하느냐?"
"Oh, no my king, I, I, uh," said the fox, thinking quickly. "I have a cold. Yes, I have a cold! So my nose is very stuffy. I cannot smell anything very well," he said. "I can only guess that your breath smells good. What do you think?" he asked.
"오, 아닙니다 왕이시여, 전, 전, 어." 여우는 재빨리 생각을 하고서 말했어요. "전 감기가 걸렸어요. 예, 저는 감기가 걸렸어요! 그래서 제 코가 꽉 막혔답니다. 전 어떤 냄새도 잘 맡을 수가 없어요." 여우는 말했어요. 하지만 전 폐하의 입냄새는 좋을 거라고 생각해요. 폐하께서는 어떻게 생각하시나요?" 여우가 물었어요.
"Ahh, hmm. Yes, I am sure it smells good," said the lion.
